Our History
The roots of St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Church trace back to the village of Vratnica, brought to the Detroit metropolitan area by faithful families seeking to preserve their spiritual heritage. Since its founding, our church has served as a sanctuary of faith and a gathering place for our extended community in Michigan, maintaining the sacred traditions passed down through generations.
Founding
St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Church in Troy, Michigan, was established to serve the community of immigrants from the village of Vratnica (Tetovo area) and surrounding regions. Founded in 1979 with the blessing of Bishop Firmilian, the congregation initially held services in a Detroit chapel starting in 1991. The church remains a vital center for preserving cultural and spiritual ties. Fr. Stevan Petrovich was the spiritual founder and long-time parish priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Petka - Vratnica in Detroit. He was well-known among the clergy and the faithful for his fierce confession of Christ under Communist torture, his fiery sermons, and unwavering faith.
Our Mission
Preserving Faith and Our Heritage for Generations
Our mission is to serve as a spiritual and cultural anchor for families with roots in Serbia, Macedonia, and the broader Balkan region. We are dedicated to supporting our community through worship, education, and the preservation of our rich Orthodox traditions within the Detroit metropolitan area. Together, we foster a welcoming environment where cultural heritage is celebrated and the bonds of family and faith are strengthened for years to come.
Preserving Our Cultural Heritage
We are dedicated to safeguarding the rich cultural tapestry within our Detroit community. Since our founding in Vratnica and our growth here in metropolitan Detroit, we have served as a vital hub for honoring the deep roots of our families through the Orthodox faith, community gatherings of all kinds, and traditional food, arts, folk dance, and music.
